When I first began printing from nature - directly inking and getting impressions from leaves and other natural materials on paper - I was doing it to create elements that would later be collaged into encaustic.
As I continued working with the natural materials, however, the prints more and more frequently became the focus of the work rather than a background element. I've also expanded the ways that I get images from nature. Not only am I printing with ink on paper, I'm also making direct impressions in the encaustic surface; using the dyes in the plants themselves to make prints on silk and paper (also called "eco printing"); and I'm making molds and casting 3D items like skulls and shells to make jewelry.
