All of my work, no matter the medium, focuses on building up layers; layers of wax, layers of images, layers of memories, layers of meaning, layers of fibers. Over the past year, I’ve been thinking about that a lot, and wondering how I could see and work on all the layers at the same time, interchange or turn individual layers, and shift how they interact with each other . . . the solution? Plexiglass panels. The result of all of that experimentation – and a stencil I made of my hand - is this class. We will sand, paint, stamp, scratch, stencil, ink, and write all over three panels, play with their composition, insert transparencies as additional layers, and finally, drill and attach the panels together with nuts, bolts, and glue. The final product can play with the light, be set on a table, or hung on a wall. Joy, I tell you. Sheer, clear, unfiltered joy.

This class has been designed so that each student can take home a set of completed panels, but the focus is on process, experimentation, and learning new techniques.

Kit fee of $15 payable to Instructor at class time includes 3 plexiglass panels (10” x 10”), sandpaper, a black fine-tip oil-based Sharpie Paint pen (assuming availability), four bolts, masking material, and full color handout
