Like most mixed media artists, I collect stuff. It’s no wonder I love those old “Cabinets of Curiosities” - display cabinets or even rooms full of specimens from the natural world and beyond! I can see myself hundreds of years ago gathering shells or bugs or weird rusty screws or . . . oh, yeah, I do that now! Most of it is tucked away in labeled bins in my studio, but this Book of Curiosities, made from an old gutted hardback book and tiny matchbox drawers creates the most marvelous interactive display . . .
I love how this project bring together the best of altered books and assemblage. The matchboxes become like the pages of the book, tiny drawers with your even tinier assemblages inside. In this class, you’ll make your own book by decorating reclaimed book board blanks and empty matchboxes, and then making your own assemblages to fill the “pages.” Make the book start to finish in class (ok, some folks will be adding details at home!) and learn easy ways to distress, age, and texturize your collaged book surface.
Bring a favorite quote, printed out in several different sizes and fonts, in case you want to include words in your Matchbox Book. All materials will be provided, though if you have your own favorite images, ribbons, beads and other tiny ephemera, feel free to bring them.
