Creative Allies & Adversaries
Creative blocks – and creative supports – can take many forms. Sometimes, what we think is our greatest weakness can turn out to be our greatest strength – and vice versa. In this workshop, we will be using the archetypes of the tarot and our own deep intuition to get to know our inner Creative Adversary and Creative Ally.
Based on an exercise in my book, “The Creative Conversation: ArtMaking as Playful Prayer,” you’ll have the opportunity to playfully explore through archetypes, journal writing, and collage exercise. During this 4 hour workshop, the focus will be on accessing your own intuitive voice so that you can gain insight into what’s holding you back creatively and what has the power to propel you forward. A lot of us have preconceived notions of what those things are: I encourage you to enter this workshop with an open mind.*
This is very much a process workshop. I’ll be inviting you to step outside of your comfort zone, take some risks, and let go of the outcome in exchange for a chance at discovery. I’ll provide all the artmaking materials: you just need to bring a pen, some paper or a journal for freewriting, and an open heart. You’ll walk away with an image representing your Ally and your Adversary, but you’re also likely to be surprised along the way.
Why You Want to Do This:
  • Take an afternoon for yourself to play and explore
  • Create images that embody your internal creative ally and adversary
  • Gain insight into your own creative process
  • Learn about what’s holding you back creatively and discover the tools you already have that can propel you forward
  • Works for all kinds of creative people, not just visual artists! (everyone can collage, everyone can free write)
What I’ll Provide:
  • Tarot card "deck" to draw from
  • Scissors
  • Craft knives and cutting mats
  • Glue sticks, ModPodge, gesso and matte medium
  • Collage materials
  • Minimum two collage boards (at least 8” x 10” – size may depend on availability)
  • Additional materials for the inspired: glitter glue, paint, markers, ephemera, etc.
What You’ll Want to Bring:
  • Favorite Pen
  • Journal or Notepad (I'll have paper and pens if you forget!)
  • Apron or smock
  • Comfy clothes
  • Water bottle
  • *You may be tempted to start searching for images that you think represent your ally or your adversary. While you can certainly bring your own images and collage materials, I encourage you to consider just using what’s available during the class.
